WEEDSPORT, NY (AP) – A tour bus heading for Niagara Falls rolled over on the New York State Thruway in central New York on Saturday, sending more than 50 people to hospitals, state police and a hospital said.

The full extent of the injuries was not immediately clear, but state police called it a “serious injury” wreck. Some patients were taken for high level trauma care.

The bus landed on its side in the grass along the west side of the highway near Weedsport, a village about 25 miles west of Syracuse. There were 57 people on board, the state police said.

Photos tweeted by police showed papers and other items strewn around the white bus as it stood on the curb.

The bus drove from the Fishkill area in the Hudson Valley to Niagara Falls, and passengers included children, said Auburn Community Hospital spokesman Matthew Chadderdon.

Auburn received and assessed about 27 patients including the driver, Chadderdon said. Three were moved to Upstate University Hospital, the area’s high-level trauma center. The name refers to a hospital that is specially equipped to deal with injuries.

Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse has admitted a total of 25 patients, said spokesman Darryl Geddes. He was unable to provide any information about her condition immediately.

It was not immediately clear to which company or agency the bus belonged or what caused the accident.

The lanes to the west were temporarily closed, but some later. opened again. The right lane was still closed more than four hours later and traffic was jammed for kilometers, the state police said.
