Kitchener elementary school closes after COVID-19 outbreak declared

A school in Kitchener will be ordered to close due to a COVID-19 outbreak, according to Waterloo Public Health.

Starting Wednesday, the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary School on Country Way near Bleams Road will be closed to personal study for a minimum of 10 days.

“We are taking important and necessary steps to protect children, employees and the school community from exposure to the COVID-19 virus,” said Deputy Health Officer Dr. Julie Emili in a statement.

“We are closing a school for the first time since returning to face-to-face classes this fall over concerns about the potential for widespread and rapid transmission of the virus.”

There are 19 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at the school, which has resulted in multiple cohort layoffs, public health said.

The agency also recommends rapid antigen testing as part of its plan to return to school and said it will work with school officials to distribute test kits to families.
