Mike Morrice wins in Kitchener Centre, some area ridings remain too close to call

Three of the five seats in the Waterloo region remain too tight to name, while the Greens will win one of the others in the 2021 federal elections.

At the Kitchener Center, Mike Morrice is expected to be the first Green Party candidate to win a seat in the region as he fought off a tough challenge from Conservative candidate Mary Henein Thorn to become the new MP for riding.

Morrice is set to replace Raj Saini, who withdrew from the race days after the final nomination to deal with allegations of inappropriateness. That left a wide open race as the Liberals were left without a candidate.

The Green candidate, who is the founder of the Sustainable Waterloo Region and Green Economy Canada, came in just under second place in the last provincial and federal campaigns.

In Waterloo, the first area race of the night to be called, Liberal incumbent Bardish Chagger was set to drive to an easy win for the third straight year.

The Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Youth dispersed her opposition with Meghan Shannon as her closest rival.

For the third year in a row, Kitchener-Conestoga riding is a battle between the Liberal and Conservative candidates.

As of 2 p.m., incumbent Liberal MP Tim Louis had a lead of less than 200 votes over conservative candidate Carlene Hawley. Postal voting is important to determine a winner

In 2019, Lewis ousted the Conservative MP Harold Albrecht with a few hundred votes. The two faced each other again in 2015, with Albrecht winning by a similar margin.

There will be another makeover in Kitchener South – Hespeler too, although the 7am result was too short to name

The Liberal candidate Valerie Bradford will sit with her conservative counterpart Tyler Calver from 2 p.m. with a lead of 668 votes

As with the Kitchener-Conestoga race, this race will not be decided until the postal votes are counted.

The seat was previously held by Marwan Tabbara, who first took office in 2015. He resigned from the caucus last year after it was revealed he was charged with assault. He recently confirmed that he will not run again.

Later that morning, Global News projected that incumbent Liberal MP Bryan May had beaten conservative newcomer Connie Cody in a close race.

This is his third term in a row.
