Waterloo police investigate reports of another shooting in Kitchener

Waterloo Regional Police say they are investigating reports of another shooting in Kitchener.

A police spokesman told Global News that the incident occurred on Highland Road West around 2:45 a.m.

“We have received several reports of multiple shots at a vehicle,” said Cherri Greeno.

“This vehicle was parked with two people in the supermarket parking lot in the area at the time.”

She said no one has yet reported an injury related to the incident.

Greeno warned local residents to expect an increased police presence across the area on Thursday morning while officers investigated the incident.

There have been 13 shootings in the Waterloo area this year, seven of them in the last few weeks.

Greeno said police are continuing to investigate whether any of the incidents are related.

“At the moment we don’t have any information to suggest it is linked to any other shootings, but that is definitely part of any investigation we do to see if it’s linked to any previous shootings,” she said.

This marks the second shootout in the Kitchener area this week, late Saturday, after gunfire was fired both on and off Highway 85.

That shooting resulted in a letter from Police Chief Bryan Larkin to local residents.

“Several of these investigations are multi-jurisdictional with elements of organized crime and street gang involvement,” said Larkin, noting that the area is now the second most powerful among the province’s 12 largest municipalities.

“While this violence is disheartening and worrying, I can assure every inhabitant of the Waterloo area – as your chief of police – that the members of the WRPS are dedicated and hard working – around the clock – to provide professional police services to help make this better the general well-being of our community. “
